The Sparkle of a New Start: Why a Bathroom Remodel is a Life Remodel

Neill Rossouw • April 23, 2026

We’ve all heard the phrase "home is where the heart is," but after years of sitting at kitchen tables and living rooms across East Texas, I’ve come to believe something else: The bathroom is where the soul or the energy of the day can be decided.

It is often the first place you see yourself in the mirror and the last room you inhabit before you go to bed. It’s where you organize your thoughts, reset your energy, and prepare to face the world. But what happens when that space no longer reflects who YOU are becoming? What happens when the "sparkle" of your life feels like it’s been put on pause?

The Intentionality of a Beautiful Space

When Alanah (my wife and Ekon Bath’s Creative Designer) and I started Ekon Bath in partnership with my brother Pieter (VP), our intentions were very simple but very deep. We wanted to create more beautiful, intentional spaces for people to live in. We don’t take design lightly. We’ve seen in our own lives that when you surround yourself with things you actually love and when you integrate what you’re attracted to into your physical environment, it changes you.

There’s a common misconception that you need a massive, "ideal" budget to create a space that moves you. But we’ve seen that it starts with the little things. Those little things might include a specific texture of shower materials, the way the light hits the vanity, and the absence of grout lines; these “micro” details begin to change other parts of your life. It’s a method of chipping away at the heavy tasks of life by starting with the room that holds your mornings, afternoons, and nights.

When Life Goes on "Pause"

We’ve worked with many neighbors who are in what I call a "stagnant period." Maybe the kids have gone off to college, and the house feels quieter, less vibrant. Or, as we saw with a dear client in Hallsville, perhaps you’ve spent years selflessly taking care of a loved one. That journey is spiritually and emotionally draining. Often, your own needs are put on a seemingly indefinite pause.

When that season of caretaking ends, or the "empty nest" sets in, the bathroom often stands as a monument to that past version of your life. It might be cluttered, disorganized, and that is frustrating! Maybe the shower curtain sticks to your leg, or the moldy grout is a constant, nagging reminder of a chore you just can’t get ahead of. These aren't just "house problems"; let's go beyond that idea; they are "energy problems." They bog down your energy for the entire day.

The Honeymoon and the Waiting Room

When a client finally decides to call Ekon Bath, we like to think of the beginning as the "Honeymoon Stage." This is where Alanah helps you rediscover your creative side. It’s a celebration of your life being put back on display. It gives you a reason to be excited again.

But I’m always honest with our clients: once we swing the hammer, we move from the Honeymoon into the "Waiting Room Phase." If you’ve ever waited in a hospital waiting room while a loved one is behind the doors, you know that feeling of anticipation and trust. Remodeling is no different. You’ll hear the concrete being chipped up; peek into the workspace and you’ll smell the dust, the drywall, and the primers. It can be intimidating to give someone else the reins of your future vision.

This is why we use Company Cam. We recommend our "control freak" friends (and I say that with love…you are not alone!) take a vacation while we work. We send you a link so you can see behind the scenes from your phone. You see the rotted framing we replaced, the mold we remediated, and every small and big detail come to life. You get the Birdseye view of the "surgery" without having to stand in the room.

The Trigger for a New Life

Our goal is to get you back into your space as fast as possible because we know what happens next. A bathroom renovation is rarely just about the bathroom. It’s a trigger.

Once the space is clean, organized, and beautiful, we see the shift begin. Our clients might start with painting the bedroom. They start organizing the rest of their home. They start hosting parties again. They’re excited to have the kids over for the holidays. They look forward to coming home again.

Human beings…we all need purpose. The Creator desires us to create. When you choose to partner with us, you aren't just buying a renovation project; you’re choosing to invest into the vibrant version of your future self.

We aren't here to just "do a job." We’re here to join you on a journey of growth. If you feel like you’re stuck in a rut and your space is reflecting that, don’t be ashamed. Be proud of the step you’re taking. We can’t wait to bring your space to life, because we know that when the bathroom changes, new life curiously follows.

Can you turn a 1980s bathtub into a luxury Art Deco shower? Yes. By combining custom architectural arches, high-flow plumbing for 13 water outlets, and specialized "aging-in-place" safety features, you can transform a dated bathroom into a spa-like "rainforest" sanctuary that increases home value and personal comfort. The Vision: More Than Just a Bathroom When I first met Griff Hubbard through the Rotary Club of Longview, I knew his project would be special. Griff is a man of history, particularly railroad history, and his home reflects that soul. He didn't just want a new shower; he wanted the "crowning achievement" of his home...a space that felt like an Art Deco rainforest. To truly understand Griff’s vision, I did something most contractors don't: I listened to his railroad history podcasts. This allowed us to build a design that wasn't just functional, but deeply personal. Engineering the "Rainforest" Experience The centerpiece of this transformation is the "Rainforest" shower system. To achieve this level of luxury, we had to overcome significant technical hurdles: 13 Water Outlets: We installed a massive array of body sprayers and the largest rain head Ekon Bath has ever commissioned. High-Volume Plumbing: Most older homes aren't built for this much water. We coordinated with specialists to ensure the water pressure and hot water capacity could handle the "rainforest" flow. Custom Art Deco Hardware: When standard handles didn't fit the 1920s aesthetic, we sourced custom hardware and even had a machine shop create a bespoke Art Deco drain cover. Design Details: Where History Meets Luxury Griff’s bathroom is a masterclass in Art Deco design . We replaced the standard square shower entry with a striking architectural archway . This creates a sense of "arriving" at a destination rather than just stepping into a shower. We also prioritized "Aging in Space"... a core focus at Ekon Bath. While the shower looks like a high-end spa, it secretly includes reinforced support behind the walls for future safety features, ensuring Griff can enjoy this sanctuary for years to come! The Ekon "Red Carpet" Experience At Ekon Bath, we believe the process should be as beautiful as the result. For Griff, that meant: Daily Cleanliness: We vacuumed and dusted every single afternoon so Griff could live comfortably during the renovation. Above and Beyond: To finish the job, we didn't just clean the bathroom; we power-washed his back patio to leave his entire home better than we found it.
