A Letter to My Neighbors: The Silent Guest in Your East Texas Home
There’s a specific kind of rhythm to life here in East Texas. We’re used to the heavy, sweet scent of the Piney Woods and that thick, humid air that greets us the moment we step outside. We’ve learned to live with the humidity on our porches, but most of us don't realize that it’s been cultivating into our homes, specifically our bathrooms, and it’s been invited in by the very systems meant to keep us comfortable.
I want to share a story with you that most people don't talk about at the coffee shop or at a family get-together. It’s a story about the air we breathe and the walls we live within.
The Perfect Storm We Didn't See Coming
Many of our legacy homes in historic Longview, Tyler, Lindale, Kilgore, Marshall, Hallsville, Diana, Gilmer…you get the point…some of these homes were built long before central AC was the standard. We’ve added these creature comforts by cranking the AC down to a crispy 70°F, all while still enjoying those steaming 120°F showers that make our mornings bearable. In that moment, we’re accidentally creating a "condensation chamber."
In a lot of our local homes, the ventilation isn't actually leaving the house. It’s actually recirculating! It’s either venting into the attic space or being sucked back into the AC unit, recycling that moisture-heavy air through the entire structure. Those water particles need somewhere to go, thus, it absorbs into the wood, the insulation, and the very bones of the house.
When this Story Hits My Home
For a long time, people in our area have treated mold like an aesthetic problem…something to be scrubbed away with a bit of bleach. But I’ve seen the other side of that story. My brother and partner here at Ekon Bath, Pieter, nearly lost his life to this "silent guest." At a very young age, he came down with a severe case of pneumonia that the doctors couldn't quite explain.
It wasn't until we stripped a bathroom down to the studs that we found the culprit: a massive colony of black mold thriving in the dark, damp space behind the tile. It was a life-altering moment for our family. It’s why we do what we do. It’s why we can't just "cover up" a shower with a one-day liner and call it a job well done.
The Art of Holistic Building
When we talk about a bathroom at Ekon Bath, we’re thinking about the next 18 years of client’s lives. We’re thinking about the stay-at-home moms and the children who will spend their formative years breathing the air in that house.
We’ve had to master what I call "Holistic Renovation." It’s a way of looking at a bathroom as a living system. For example, did you know that if your vent fan isn't matched to the cubic square footage of your room, it’s basically just a noise-maker? We calculate that exchange of air specifically to fight the condensation battle.
If you’re someone who loves a hot shower and a cold house, we look at things like built-in heaters for the ventilation to prep the surfaces, or even dehumidifier systems—like the Santa Fe units I use in my own home. Keeping your home between 42% and 45% relative humidity is one of the greatest gifts you can give your family's health.
Moving Beyond the Grout
In East Texas, our soil is always moving. Those tiny, hairline cracks you see in your grout? Those are open invitations for moisture. That’s why we’ve moved toward the Onyx Collection, a solid surface systems that don't have pores or grout lines. It gives you that boutique, resort feeling without the "hospital" look, but with all the hygiene of a sterile space.
We even think about the toilets. It sounds simple, but a bidet system like the ADA-compliant Horow T-38P changes your day-to-day hygiene in a way that is truly life-giving, especially if you’re navigating health challenges that require a little extra care.
A Legacy Worth Handing Down
I know that when we talk about intentional design, it can often feel like a luxury that’s out of reach. But I’ve realized that life doesn't often give us a second chance when it comes to our health.
Whether you’re living in a home that’s been in your family for generations or you’re building your own legacy, you shouldn't feel trapped by your space. You should be proud of it. You should be excited to have people over, knowing that when you eventually hand that home off to the next generation, you’re handing off something healthy, safe, and built with integrity.
We don’t just want to change your tile; we want to change your morning. If you’ve been dealing with those "unexplained" health issues, or if you’re just ready to see what a healthy, holistic space feels like, come see us at the showroom. Alanah, our creative designer, is there to listen to your story and help you visualize a future where your home is your sanctuary, not your struggle.
